How Do You Bake a Potato on a Gas Grill?

!±8± How Do You Bake a Potato on a Gas Grill?

Are you a "meat and potatoes" man (or woman)? While you're out grilling those steaks, how about killing two birds with one stone and grill up some scrumptious baked potatoes? One of the more frequently asked questions we hear is "how do you bake a potato on a gas grill?" Many of us are used to baking our potatoes in the oven or even the microwave but when you bake a potato on a gas grill you will find that you get the full flavor to tease your taste buds.

So, how do you bake a potato on a gas grill? Start by washing them thoroughly with a scrub brush. Be aware that you should put the potatoes on the gas grill 45 minutes prior to the meat. When you follow this plan all of your food will be completely done at the same time and ready to eat.

There are two options for baking a potato on a gas grill. Both are very easy. First, you have the option of wrapping the whole potato in aluminum foil. Be sure to spread a thin layer of oil on the foil and at this point you may also add seasonings of your choice such as salt and pepper. Other spices that go well are seasoning salt or garlic. The grill's heating temperature should be set on low (375-400 degrees F) and placement of the potatoes should be away from direct heat so they don't get too hot. The top rack would be the best place to put the potatoes. Close the lid of the barbecue and cook the potatoes for 45 minutes, turning occasionally. You will know they are done when a fork stuck inside will easily come out so be sure not to overcook them.

The other method makes a more crispy potato. With this option you will want to cut your potatoes in half lengthwise and slice the tops creating a grid pattern. The scoring will allow for less cooking time. Brush the tops with oil and sprinkle on your seasonings. Place the potatoes skin down on the top shelf. With the lid closed, allow the potatoes to bake on the grill for 30 minutes.

If you need to speed up the time on the grill then you can pre-heat the potatoes in a microwave oven. If the potatoes on the gas grill take longer than mentioned here then your grill was too cool and you need to pump up the heat. Also, the larger the potato the more you will need to cook it. The information here is based on a 1/3-1/2 lb. potato. If you purchase larger ones figure in an additional 1/2-hour for each 1/2 lb. Don't let the potatoes sit once they are done, but rather remove the foil immediately and serve with butter and sour cream. If you like, you could chop some fresh green onions or chives to add on top.

Add a salad and/or more grilled vegetables and you have a great, simple meal that is perfect for a BBQ night at home with the family or for outdoor entertaining. For a healthy meal, enjoy baked potatoes with beef, chicken, pork, fish or even just on their own.
